Youth placed in Families First of Virginia’s TFC program that are over the age of 14 may be eligible for this service.

SHINE was created to go beyond traditional case management to put an emphasis on assisted foster youth placed in our TFC program to not only develop goals for themselves, but to achieve them!  It is our agency’s goal to respond to the national epidemic of foster youth emancipating from care without tools to sustain independence, and to specifically ensure the local youth we serve are those of positive statistics: high school graduates, college graduates, employment, secure housing, financial security, healthy relationships, and permanent family connections.

SHINE curriculum was developed based on 5 Core Competencies

  • Health & Leisure
  • Financial Management
  • Education
  • Personal Relationships
  • Life Skills

Youth in this program will be assessed using pre/mid/post testing from Daniel Memorial Institute, including transitional treatment planning based on testing results, and will participate in monthly workshops developed from our curriculum. Topics include: consumer skills, Housing Series, Employment Search, Interview Skills (local businesses on site), College Tour, Critical Thinking, Fresh Start Series, Senior Year, Educational Opportunities, and Preparing for Emancipation.

Do you have a youth who would benefit from SHINE?
